Working at St. Bernard's

The esprit de corps of teachers and staff, with their dedication to their pupils and affection for the school and its quirks, the energy and promise of the boys themselves, and the astounding loyalty of their parents—all make St. Bernard’s a strong and happy place in which to work, learn, and teach.

"St. Bernard's is a nurturing oasis of support, education, and character development.  It is a school that relies on a trust-based connection with the community, fed by the human touch.  Thirty-eight years ago I stumbled upon this school looking for a place to do my student teaching, a place that could help me tap into my strengths and support my growth as a teacher.  Well, I've been at St. Bernard's ever since, and I am still learning and growing thanks to my colleagues and the boys.  This is truly a special school, one that I will always call home."

"It is hard to sum up the reasons why I have stayed at St. Bernard’s. It is probably because, as an institution, St. Bernard's has a strong sense of what it is about but does not take itself too seriously.  Humor and resilience are important lessons to learn at any age. I have loved teaching ninth grade over the decades.  I am fascinated by the way that boys grow up at such different rates and the role that time takes in each boy’s development."

"In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of the Scholar, 'Gladly would he learn and gladly would he teach.'  In my 35 years at St. Bernard’s, I have learned far more than I have taught.  In honor of the boys, their parents, and my colleagues, I continue to learn and teach, gladly, at this place that I love."

"Every day is a world unto itself.  The boy who enters in the morning, shakes your hand, and with a sly smile uncorks a joke.  The wise colleague who tells splendid stories.  The coach who leads the huddle with the cheer, '1, 2, 3...HARD WORK!'  The student who beams because he has grasped an idea that he has been trying valiantly to understand.  The graduate who returns to tell tales and show baby pictures.  No two days are ever the same, and there's wonder everywhere you look.  It's an honor to be here.  I've given the school a great deal, and St. B's has given me far more in return."

"What I like best about St. Bernard's is that it supports the principle that there is much to be learned outside the classroom.  The trips sponsored by the school have greatly broadened the lives of our students.  In the years that I have been teaching here, I have led more than 50 trips, which have provided the students abundant educational and growth opportunities for observing different cultures and norms, and also for handling themselves and interacting with each other effectively in unfamiliar environments far from home."

"Appreciation.  There are many reasons why I have embraced this community for so many years, but the main reason is the appreciation given to me and my colleagues.  Our community has evolved in so many ways, but the gratitude we receive from each other, from parents, alumni, and students is constant and without measure."

"St. Bernard's is not just a school.  It is a community that welcomes you from day one.  It is kind, thoughtful, passionate, ingratiating, and appreciative amongst many other things.  To have the ability to teach so many boys throughout my career and to be able to track their ventures thereafter as they go on to become men is a deeply satisfying and redeeming experience.  Personally, in good times and bad, the community is always there to stand behind you and for that I will forever be grateful.  It is just a wonderful place to work and that is why I have stayed for as long as I have."

"Three things immediately come to mind: family, tradition, and friends.  First, St Bernard's has been a part of my family history.  My father, four uncles, and my son are proud Old Boys.  They shared their wonderful stories and made lifelong friends.  Secondly, long-standing traditions: the carols, the Shakespeare plays, and class assemblies.  Watching the boys grow from young to future men in stature and confidence is fantastic.  Lastly, I have had the pleasure of working with bright, intelligent, professional educators to create solid educational programs for St Bernard's boys."

"I enjoy the camaraderie and work ethic of my colleagues, as well as the freedom to teach interesting subjects like Roman history.  I appreciate St. Bernard's emphasis on the arts and look forward to watching boys perform in concerts and plays.  I love that our culture celebrates kookiness and a zany sense of humor."

"St. Bernard's is rather a special school.  It is hard to imagine another place of work that combines the values of grit and good humor in the same vein with such great success.  It upholds its history and traditions with deep reverence inspiring both faculty and students alike.  I count myself fortunate to be a part of this exceptional school where curious-minded boys make my job an absolute delight."

I love St. Bernard's for its old-fashioned emphasis on knowledge—but also for its enthusiasm and joy. The boys are curious, energetic, and full of fun. It's all here: playful assembly skits, poetry recitation, recess mayhem, and deep discussions of Buddhism's Four Noble Truths. Hard to define, never boring—it's a happy and timeless place. I'm so grateful to have taught years of fifth grade boys here.

By some great happenstance, I was hired to work at St. Bernard's as an art teacher in the summer of 2005. Having been born and raised in Miami, FL, I had no prior knowledge of St. Bernard's and was only planning to stay at the school for one or two years. As I now enter my 20th year at the school, my commitment to St. Bernard's is a direct result of their commitment to me, both professionally and personally. The school has supported me through two major role changes and fatherhood. I feel valued for my mind and heart, and I am grateful to be a part of this community. We also have great lunches!

St. Bernard's is an excellent school for boys, and it is so much more. It is a vibrant, supportive community of students, teachers, staff, and families. This is a place where hard work, curiosity, and good humor form the bedrock of daily life. I have never worked in a school so deeply and sincerely dedicated to the members of its community, past and present. St. Bernard's feels like a home, and I am so grateful to be part of the family.

I continue to work at St. B’s because there is, quite simply, a community here unlike any other: loyal, supportive, and deeply rooted in tradition. My years as a third grade teacher were particularly meaningful because I had the privilege of getting to know the boys at such an impressionable age, watching them rise to challenges with spirit and humor, and connecting with their families, many of whom remain dear friends today. One of my favorite St. B’s memories is bringing my son as a baby to the Great Skate and the benefit. Now he goes to the same events with his own lifelong friends, a reminder of how this place weaves generations together. Watching these boys grow through the years is a privilege I’ll never take for granted, and I’ll be forever grateful to the school for giving me such dear friends.

What keeps me at St. Bernard’s after 20 years? The easy and obvious answer is that it’s this extraordinary community - made up of colleagues who have become like family, of talented and hard-working boys and their families, of Old Boys who have grown up to become friends - that has made the notion of leaving unthinkable. As I’m marking this 20-year milestone, however, I’m also prompted to reflect on how it felt to be here when I first arrived. I vividly remember a conversation a few months into that first year with Stuart Johnson, who asked me for my general impressions of the school up to that point. I remember saying to him, “It feels like I designed the place.” Despite having spent many years in school and university settings as a student, lecturer, and administrator, I had never imagined finding a professional home that could provide an outlet for all of my interests at once: playing the piano and singing every day, listening to music with students and explaining its history, discussing the lives and works of my favorite composers and poets, assisting with Shakespeare performances and class plays and arguing over grammar in the faculty room. In addition, I have received generous support and time away for travel abroad, both as a scholar and performer. From the beginning, the astonishing array of opportunities presented by St. Bernard’s has continued to grow steadily. While in the beginning I taught only music classes in the 3rd-9th grade, nine years ago, I was able to add teaching 8th-grade Critical Reading as well. In the last two years, I’ve joined the Latin department and have become the weekly Bible Story teller in the Junior School. In no other place could I imagine having the freedom and encouragement to do all of these things at once, activities which bring me a great sense of fulfillment. Becoming and remaining a part of this wonderful, quirky place has been one of the great privileges of my life.
