Upper School Concert

Roughly one-third of St. Bernard’s boys play a musical instrument outside of school, and during the winter term, several recitals are held to showcase their talent.  This morning the Upper School musicians performed in front of the entire school assembly.

The concert began with a superb rendition of William Gillock’s Sonatina by David S. followed by John S. playing Gentle Breeze by Joanne Bender.  Pianists played classical pieces by Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, and Debussy.  The younger boys were happy to recognize the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in Akachi A.’s triumphant performance of Variations on “Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman” by Mozart.  All of the pianists played beautifully.

After a one-minute intermission, Santi S. and John W. demonstrated their guitar skills.  Ammad Z. played Teen Tal on tabla drums.  David Bowie’s Space Oddity and George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps added some rock and roll to the mix.  Henry D. took Joe Walsh’s Life’s Been Good and changed the lyrics to reminisce about his years at St. Bernard’s.  A rousing drum performance warmed up the crowd for the finale, an Oasis song performed by four boys, one of whom came back from his new school to perform with his former classmates.

It was an impressive hour of music and we thank Mrs. Fertel and Mr. Risinger for organizing this exceptional display of talent.  Bravo to all!
