Reports To: Heads of Middle and Upper Schools
Status:  Temporary, full-time
Anticipated Term: December 2026  - June 2027 
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. with occasional required evening commitments, including parent conferences and school events.  


Job Overview: 
St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, educates a diverse community of approximately 385 students and employs approximately 100 faculty and staff members.

St. Bernard’s seeks a Middle and Upper School Science Teacher specializing in chemistry and biology to provide maternity leave coverage from December 2026 through June 2027. The teacher will report to the Heads of the Middle and Upper Schools and collaborate closely with members of the science department, as well as homeroom teachers in grades VI and VII.

Our science program aims to provide students with a firm  understanding of scientific disciplines while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of discovery. Building a strong foundation of knowledge, performing laboratory investigations, and engaging in hands-on experimentation are central to the program. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate science lessons for boys in grades VI (chemistry)  and VII (human biology).
  • Assess, document, and communicate student learning, development, and progress.
  • Provide students with timely, constructive, and meaningful feedback.
  • Maintain a safe, organized classroom and laboratory environment and ensure the proper and safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Assist the science department with the planning, setup, and execution of the school’s annual science fair and support students in the development and completion of science fair projects. 
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the science department, homeroom teachers, and division heads.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school community, including supervising a student lunch table and attending assemblies, meetings, and other school events.
  • Provide classroom or supervisory coverage as needed and contribute flexibly to the school's needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.


Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, science education, or a related field is required.
  • Previous experience teaching science, preferably at the middle school level
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for chemistry and biology
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to foster curiosity, engagement, and a passion for learning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Flexibility and willingness to contribute to the broader life of the school
  • Appreciation for ritual, tradition, and the joyful unpredictability of a boys’ school
  • For all St. Bernard’s positions, the ability to play the piano is always considered appealing—music is part of everyone’s day—but it is by no means a requirement.

Compensation and Benefits 
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated base compensation for the December 2026 to June 2027 appointment is $49,000 to $70,000, depending on the exact dates of employment. St. Bernard’s School considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
