April 2019 Class Notes

Fred Gardner ’47 continues to live with his wife, Gael, on his beautiful 56-acre farm north of Princeton, New Jersey. Gael takes care of the horses, chickens, and sheep. Gael also grows summer and winter vegetables, rides regularly, and takes dressage lessons. Fred continues to paint watercolors and had a show last fall at the new East Amwell Museum. Reuel Wilson ’51 wrote a memoir, Holding the Road: Away from Edmund Wilson and Mary McCarthy, which follows the author through his childhood, spent in the households of his divorced parents, and then the expanding perspectives of his adult life. The memoir is available for purchase on Amazon.
 
Jake Howard-Potter ’89 has a solo show, Bringing Steel to Life: An Exhibition of Sculpture, running March 28 through April 26, 2019. The exhibition is featured at the LIC Arts Open Gallery at The Factory in Long Island City.
 
David Silkenat ’91 published his third book, Raising the White Flag: How Surrender Defined the American Civil War. David lives in Scotland and teaches at the University of Edinburgh.

Justin Brown ’96 was married to Caroline McWilliams Alsup on November 3, 2018, in Austin, Texas. 

Robbie Pennoyer ’97 and wife, Polly, had a son, Russell “Cooper” on April 1, 2019.  Cooper joins big sister Victoria. 
 
Jonathan Shifke ’02 was married to Rose Filler on October 20, 2018 in Aspen, Colorado.
 
Brian Alvarado ’06 played John Wellington Wells, a sorcerer, in “The Sorcerer” (by Gilbert & Sullivan) presented by Utopia Opera at the Ida K. Lang Recital Hall at Hunter College in February 2019.

Bates College hosted the first day of the annual Wallach Invitational in singles and doubles play against players from Amherst, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Colby, Skidmore, Trinity, and Wheaton. Alexander Kennedy ’13 and Alex Wernink ’14 teamed up in the A Doubles Flight defeating Colby and Trinity, falling to Tufts in the quarterfinals.

Alex ’14 and Nicholas ’16 Wernink have a tennis podcast, Tennis Nearer the Gods. The podcast covers the latest news and results from the 2019 ATP season. The podcast is available on iTunes, Wordpress, YouTube, and SoundCloud. Alex was the recipient of the Lt. Frederick M. Scribner, Jr. Boys’ 18 Sportsmanship Award presented by the United States Tennis Association in January 2019.
 
Euan Luke ’17 plays on the boys varsity squash team at Andover.

Darius Anagnos ’19 performed in The Yorkville Nutcracker in December 2018. 2018 marked the 23rd anniversary of The Yorkville Nutcracker which includes lavish sets and costumes and takes the audience through a tour through some of New York’s beloved landmarks, including a holiday party at Gracie Mansion.
