The 2017 St. B’s Egg Drop

This semester eighth graders have contemplated gravity, air resistance, and impact as they worked on their egg-drop contraptions in science.
Each student built a customized container to protect a raw egg during a three-story vertical drop out a window onto the recess deck.  A wide range of materials were utilized, including cups, straws, sponges, socks, bread, and balloons.  Some boys focused on extending the drag of the fall, while others focused on lessening the power of impact.

Their weeks of hard work paid off this week in the fourth annual St. B’s egg drop, which spanned over two days.  There were some tragic yolk spills, but there were also many eggs that survived the dramatic fall.  The boys cheered each other on throughout, regardless of the outcome.  Mr. Jacala dropped the eggs from a science room window, and Mr. Parsons inspected each container on the recess deck and back in the lab.  Mr. Parsons was egg-static with the results and looks forward to continuing this tradition next year.
