The Later Alligator Program is Five Years Old

St. Bernard’s offers a robust after-school program, called the Later Alligator Program (or LAP for short).
LAP started five years ago when it became clear that after-school programming would be beneficial for St. Bernard’s families.  At that time there were some after-school classes being offered, but the need for a streamlined, school-sanctioned program became clear.  With many years of summer camp programming under his belt, Coach Silver set up an after-school program for St. Bernard’s.  He kept the classes that were already being offered and began expanding the offerings to try to ensure that there was something for everyone.  He wanted every boy to have access to any class that he was interested in.

Coach Silver noticed that there were times where programming would be beneficial.  He created classes specifically for Kindergarten boys from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. and for all students from 4:45 - 5:30 p.m.  Under his guidance, the after-school programming expanded to cover four days per week from 2:00 - 5:30 p.m.  Coach Silver also added new classes.  Chess, detective agency, art, robotics, language classes, homework help, and more sports activities were added.  Currently there are thirty-two classes offered per week, and 206 boys are enrolled.  Many boys take multiple classes after school, totaling 433 individual enrollments per week.  Coach Silver notes that this is the largest enrollment he has seen and is happy to see what a huge part of the school LAP has become.  It has truly become a part of the St. B’s experience.

The LAP program encourages participation from faculty as well as students.  Over thirty faculty members teach LAP classes, which helps strengthen the community aspect of the program.  The diversity of programs also encourages high participation among the boys.  Coach Silver enjoys seeing what each boy selects and is pleased that boys try a variety of activities.  Coach Silver would encourage all St. B’s boys to give LAP a try.  It’s a good opportunity to spend time with friends in another environment, and there’s something for everyone.  Several LAP classes are new this year, including Spanish, offered to Junior School boys, and Modding in Minecraft.  Chess is the most popular class this semester, especially in the Junior School.

Coach Silver has enjoyed seeing LAP grow into a vital part of St. B’s.  After five years, LAP has become one of St. Bernard’s much-loved traditions, and we look forward to seeing the program continue to grow.
