Lunar New Year

Tuesday, February 1, marked Lunar New Year but the celebration lasts for many days.  Colorful festivals, parades, fireworks displays, and family dinners usher in the year of the tiger.  Many St. Bernard’s families celebrate the holiday and all of our students have been learning about the holiday in class.
Year after year, Ms. Flannigan’s first grade revels in Lunar New Year.  “It’s my favorite holiday,” Ms. Flannigan says.  Her room is decorated in red lanterns and dragons.  This year was made extra special by a visit from Mandy T., mother of J.J.  Ms. T. read a book to the class and shared the lovely ways her family starts the new year, including family meals.  Starting the new year with a clean slate involves clearing the apartment and a new haircut for J.J.

The boys in I Passero wrote compositions describing Lunar New Year which are proudly displayed on poster boards in the school lobby.

Ms. T taught us to say, “Gung hay fat choy,” which is how Cantonese speakers wish one another a happy and prosperous new year.  May the year of the tiger be a great one!
