Title:  Junior School Librarian
Reports To: Library Director
Status: Faculty
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.)


Job Overview: 
St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 375 students and 100 employees.

The Junior School librarian is an essential part of the Junior School faculty and works collaboratively with teachers to encourage and nurture the love of reading in the boys. The librarian maintains a collection that reflects St. Bernard’s long-held traditions and commitment to the classics and that also represents authors and titles from across the rich diversity of our world. The Junior School librarian ensures that the library has materials that support in-class learning and projects. They aim to make sure the library offers materials that support every boy. They endeavor to make the library the welcoming “heart” of St. Bernard’s.


Responsibilities: 
  • Teach Junior School library classes (K-Grade III)
  • Support and nurture the love of reading across genres
  • Create a joyful, welcoming space both in the physical library and digitally
  • Work collaboratively and proactively with classroom teachers to support student reading, research, and the Junior School curriculum
  • Ensure the Junior School library collection, both print and digital, supports the curriculum, in-class projects, the St. Bernard’s Reading Lists, the Good Heart Program, and the school’s mission
  • Promote reader’s advisory and reference assistance to students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Oversee the maintenance and development of the K-Grade III library collection, including circulation, collection development, cataloging, inventory, and deaccessioning
  • Oversee the Book-a-Day program for the kindergarten
  • Contribute actively as a member of the Library Department to develop and implement the library scope and sequence and the mission of the library
  • Coordinate, with the library team, an annual Junior School author visit, the Used Book Sale, the Book Fair, and other special events
  • Create engaging book displays and bulletin boards to promote books and reading 
  • Train and supervise parent volunteers
  • Update patron records in Follett Destiny
  • Oversee all aspects of library photos
  • Coordinate gifts for commencement
  • Seek and welcome opportunities for telling the boys stories at assemblies and during class time
  • Be able and willing to cover classes and other supervisory periods when needed 
  • Participate in the life of the school community through activities such as supervising a student lunch table, attending assemblies and Junior School division meetings, etc. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School



Qualifications: 
  • Master of Library Science (MLS or MLIS) preferred
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience in a school library, preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of and a passion for children’s literature including classics and contemporary titles
  • An energetic, collaborative, and flexible disposition and a love of working with students in K-Grade III
  • Strong knowledge of the content area, teaching methods, and educational research related to lower-school learners and readers
  • Experience evaluating and selecting print and digital resources
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Sense of humor
  • Attention to detail
  • Active memberships in professional associations
  • Ability to lift, stand, and perform light physical tasks in a busy school library
  • For all St. Bernard’s positions, the ability to play the piano is always considered a plus (music is a part of everyone’s day).

Technology and Software Knowledge and Experience 
  • Google Suite for Education 
  • Microsoft Office
  • Platforms such as Follett Destiny Library Manager, Overdrive Marketplace, Sora and Ingram iPage are preferred.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is  $75,000 - $120,000. St. Bernard’s School considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
