Grade IX Visits Morocco

IXB Visit to Morocco, February 25-March 8
by Virginie de Haugoubart and Oliver Bowcock

As the many photos will show, the ninth grade had a wonderful trip to Morocco.  The aim of this trip was to challenge the boys.  Although there were many enjoyable parts of our time in Morocco, this trip was far from being a vacation; we had a demanding itinerary and many challenges, including extensive travel within Morocco.  The boys saw the extraordinary geographical range of this beautiful country.  Many of them commented on the variety of scenery and the grandeur of the landscape.  They also tried a lot of Moroccan cuisine, eating many dishes prepared in tagines.  Two boys, Max E. and Rudd F., had birthdays during our trip, so we had plenty of reason to celebrate.

We spent our first few days in Marrakesh, where there is much to explore.  We were awakened each day by the call to prayer.  We visited the stunning sixteenth century Koranic school, and we learned about Islamic teaching and art.  We then set off for the High Atlas to spend two days hiking and exploring.  The skies were bright blue, and the almond blossom was just coming into flower.  We stayed at a simple bergerie where we were often above the clouds.  In the chilly evenings, the goats and sheep were led in to the fold next to our house.  We then headed on a grueling trek to the desert.  We traveled in four vehicles and, after several days, arrived at the edge of the amazing Sahara; we climbed sand dunes and spent an unforgettable star-filled night in desert tents.  The boys have returned with many exceptional memories of this fascinating country.  They are full of stories and all that they have learned.

We wish to thank all those who made this adventure possible:  St. Bernard’s School, the Thomas H. Bolkcom Memorial Fund for ninth grade travel and cultural activities, Valerie and Lionel Evrard, Youssef, Ali, and Thijs and Cristina and their family.  Merci à tous!
