On Thursday, January 16, 2014, the third Thursday of the year, over 240 Old Boys gathered at 4 East 98th Street for the Old Boys Dinner.
The evening kicked off with cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvre in the small gym where Old Boys were able to catch up with their former teachers, both current and retired. Evan Moraitis taught a packed class on Singapore Math with close to thirty men in attendance. One Old Boy commented on how much more accessible it makes teaching math to his four year old son. Gifford Miller ’83, head of the custodes and trustee, addressed the crowd in the small gym, giving a special welcome to Tim Goodale ’82 who traveled the farthest from London, England for the dinner. Also given applause were the oldest Old Boys to attend, Charlie Kinsolving ’40 and Philip Potter ’40. Mr. Potter, it turns out, is a celebrity amongst the Middle School boys. In assembly that morning fourth grader Brady B. commented “Mr. Potter was a football captain! It’s on the plaque upstairs.” We hope Mr. Potter enjoyed that story.
In attendance this year we had three sets of fathers and sons and five sets of brothers. The youngest attending Old Boys were from the class of 2005, which had twelve representatives. Everyone sang the Old Boys Song before heading to dinner in the medium gym where tables were organized by class. Chef Carolyn Wells prepared a feast that included beef short ribs and salmon. The buffet was an architectural masterpiece, recycling stage props from Grade VIII’s first ever performance of Romeo and Juliet. After dinner many Old Boys continued to reconnect with their classmates over cigars and singing some of their favorite St. B’s songs.
Thanks to all who helped to make the event a success, especially Director of Old Boys Elizabeth Tobin; Chef Carolyn Wells and her amazing team; and Jay Lopez, Julio Rodriguez, Francisco Lopez, and Tony Barrios and their fantastic team.
