The Return of the Class Play

After a long hiatus, class plays have returned to the stage of the Small Gym.

Each week a different class performs the play to an audience of just their parents.  The play is recorded and presented to the rest of the school on Friday morning in our all-school Zoom assembly.  The boys are so happy to perform in front of a live audience and we hope the parents enjoy being back in the school again. The plays will take place weekly through the spring.

The lineup began with the sixth grade.  VI Landesman displayed their oratory skills with a series of great American speeches ranging from the Declaration of Independence to Sojourner Truth’s famous 1851 “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech.  The following week, VI Krasnavage continued this concept, but with more current speeches.  Highlights included Nixon’s “I am not a crook” declaration and Amanda Gorman’s poem from the Biden inauguration.  A young Arnold Schwarzenegger in a time machine from the 1989 movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure offered some comic relief.

IV Davis and I Roberts brought us more traditional school plays.  Colorful sets from the art department and vibrant costumes assembled by parent volunteers added to the production value.  A St. Bernard’s play wouldn’t be complete without music, and Ms. Fertel and Mr. Risinger never disappoint.

The final play of the term, performed by I Passero and II Webb, was a compilation of holiday favorites including “Miracle on 98th Street,” “Elf” (starring Mr. Schwartz as Buddy), and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”  Mr. Risinger sang “You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” accompanied by older boys who played the Grinch when they were in second grade (click here for the video).  The entire production was a delight from start to finish.
