St. B's Names New Head of School

On Monday evening, it was announced that Joy S. Hurd, IV, will become the next headmaster of St. Bernard's School, beginning in July 2022.  Mr. Hurd is currently the head of school at Lake Forest Country Day School, in Illinois.

Mr. Hurd is a former St. Bernard's faculty member; he was a Grade VII homeroom teacher, taught Latin, and was a secondary school advisor.  In a letter to the community on Tuesday morning, Mr. Hurd wrote, "Thanks to Stuart Johnson’s leadership and belief in my potential early in my career, St. Bernard’s is where I learned the hard work, the skills, and the fun of being a teacher.  I will be forever grateful to him for granting me such an opportunity.  He entrusted me with the responsibility not only to teach the boys of VII-Hurd but also to mentor them in a role that was, by design, both academic and pastoral.  My years as a member of the faculty—as a homeroom teacher; as an instructor of Latin, history, and English; as a secondary school advisor—were undoubtedly the most formative of my career and even of my own education.  My colleagues and students taught me more than I ever could have hoped for or expected.  At St. Bernard’s I learned how to teach, how to connect authentically with my students and their families, and even how to whistle (poorly).  The impact that the school’s people, culture, and traditions have had on me is profound.  Though I left St. Bernard’s in 2012, St. Bernard’s has never left me."

Mr. Hurd will join St. B's for the 2022-2023 school year, which means that we have the good fortune of being under the helm of interim head of school Evan Moraitis for one more year.
