St. B’s Track and Field
St. Bernard’s track team had a great spring season. They started their season practicing in Central Park when there was still snow on the ground and completed it with a final track meet at Icahn Stadium on May 23, 2016. It was an honor simply to qualify for the final track meet, called Gotham Games. Six St. B’s boys finished in the top sixteen of at least one track and field pre-qualifying event to earn a place in the finals: Christian F., Caleb L., Leo M., Owen P., Tahryam T., and Otto W.
Otto W. was the first St. B’s boy to compete in the Boys Long Jump. He placed third with a distance of 5.39 meters. Taryham T. competed next in the Boys 400 Meter Dash. He finished in second place with a time of 58.27 seconds. Three boys competed in the Boys 100 Meter Dash. Christian F. finished fifth with a time of 12.62 seconds. Taryham T. finished eighth with a time of 12.84 seconds, and Otto W. placed tenth with a time of 13.02 seconds. Otto W. also competed in the Boys 200 Meter Dash, and he placed sixth with a time of 26.47 seconds. Leo M. competed in the Ninth Grade Boys 800 Meter Run, and he finished first with a time of 2:39.29.
A highly-anticipated event of the day was the Boys 4x100 Meter Relay. St. B’s team included Christian F., Caleb L., Tahryam T., and Otto W. It was a close race, and St. B’s finished second with a time of 51.89 (with the first place team finish with a time of 51.73). We captured the race to the finish line in the attached video.
Congratulations to all of the boys who competed and to all of the boys on the track team who competed throughout the year and continuously beat their personal bests. St. B’s track coaches, Coach Hill, Coach Mutekanga, and Coach Scott, deserve special recognition for teaching skills and helping each boy do his best. They have created a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
