He's a Mensch!

The first Middle School Mensch Prize was awarded to Adam C. this week.  The Mensch Prize is awarded to a boy from the Middle School who shows remarkably good character.  Mr. Clavel describes Adam C. as a terrific, modest boy who frequently goes out of his way to help others.  Mr. Demeny says Adam C. is as good-hearted as the day is long.  Not only do Adam’s teachers notice these qualities, but his classmates recognize these characteristics in him as well.

The Mensch Prize was first established in 2007, when a group of teachers put their heads together to find a creative way to celebrate good behavior they observed in specific students.  These teachers believed that too often boys hear the about what they’re doing wrong and thought they should also be rewarded for the good things they do.  Since 2007, over 150 boys have been awarded the Mensch Prize.  The names of all Mensch Prize winners are printed in the annual Middle School Planner book.

In Middle School assembly this week, the boys described the characteristics of someone who might be awarded the Mensch Prize.  This boy would persevere, put others first, remain optimistic, and know what’s right.  He would be supportive, helpful, talented, and show someone else how to do something.  He would also be kind and hard-working.

When a boy is awarded the Mensch Prize, he becomes the guardian of Squishy, a trophy and toy all in one.  Squishy quickly acquired his name because his spine is not so rigid.  The current Squishy is not the original Squishy.  He is actually the fifth version of Squishy, whose strings have a tendency to break over time.  Squishy is allowed to take a quick visit home with the boy, but he lives at St. B’s.  When the time comes for Squishy to move to the next the winner, Adam C. will do the honors with Mr. Demeny and hand Squishy to next deserving boy.

Congratulations to Adam C.!
