Cutting-edge Technology at St. Bernard's

It has been a busy summer for St. Bernard’s technology team.  The director of technology, Benny Chan, installed a new AV system in the small gym.  The new system includes a touchpad console, a powerful laser projector, new speakers, and new microphones.  It will be put to good use in weekly assemblies, class performances, multi-cultural fairs, student-produced documentary screenings, and professional development workshops.

The school added to its inventory of iPads, bringing the total count close to 100.  Teachers use iPads to teach reading, spelling, math, and science with apps like Zookazam, WilderQuest, Grammaropolis, SplashMath, Starfall, Kidspiration, and Voice Thread, among others.  IPads are also used in the classroom to project lessons or to project an example of a student’s work in progress.  Students may use iPads in the library to search the school catalog, explore apps that support their learning in history and science, and listen to audio books or music that students learn about in music class.

St. Bernard’s now has 55 Chromebooks, which are being used for web-based research projects in conjunction with Google Docs.  Mr. Landesman’s and Mr. Moraitis’ Grade VI classes have already used Chromebooks to work on their in-class essays about their summer reading book, Dragonwings.  Mr. Landesman uses Google Docs as a writing tool and appreciates how students are able to easily track their changes, review their old work, and get faster feedback from their instructors.

Later this year, St. Bernard’s will acquire a 3D scanner and a second 3D printer.  Ms. Oduro and her students have already experimented with St. Bernard’s 3D printer and have built objects like a miniature cannon.  Ms. Oduro will be teaching a 3D Design & Printing class for the first time this year.  Ms. Oduro will also be teaching students how to program a game, using Scratch, and then attach a circuit board to an object that will become the control board for their game, using MakeyMakey technology.

Mr. Grossblatt is currently teaching the boys how to code using the Assembler language.  Later in the year Mr. Grossblatt’s students will use their knowledge to build a computer from scratch.

As the year continues, look for updates to the ever-expanding technology at St. B’s.
