IV Russell Promotes National Deaf History Month
by Nadine Thomas
The boys in Mr. Russell’s fourth grade class assisted with the creation of a bulletin board to bring awareness to National Deaf History Month. They were eager to participate as hand models for the letters in the American Sign Language Alphabet, and their finger placement was excellent. Mr. Russell even tried his hand at the letter “R” with great success.
National Deaf History Month began when two employees at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., began teaching their colleagues sign language. These lessons evolved into Deaf Awareness Week, which was celebrated by the library. In 1996 the National Association of the Deaf wanted the week to become a full month, and in 1997 Deaf Awareness Week became National Deaf History Month, which is now recognized annually from March 13 to April 15.
IV Russell parents, can you pick out your son’s hand?
