Walk to Cure Diabetes
by Guy Schwartz
Should I take my sunglasses or my umbrella or both? This was the question I faced as I got ready to join other St. Bernard’s families for the juvenile diabetes walk across the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday, September 30. The weather channel predicted rain but things looked rather promising from my window. I took both sunglasses and umbrella and headed off for Foley Square downtown. Several St. Bernard’s teachers, administrators, parents, Old Boys, and students were all gathered near the courthouse, ready to begin our walk to Brooklyn to raise money for research and to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes. Heather Sargent, mother of Old Boy Crawford ’14, was one of the principle organizers of the event, and many of us had turned out to show our support for her daughter, Schuyler, who had been diagnosed with diabetes three years ago. Everyone was in an excellent mood. The sun came out and so did the sunglasses. The views of Manhattan’s downtown skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge were spectacular, the weather couldn’t have been more pleasant, and the camaraderie made the experience a real keeper!
