Students vs. Faculty Basketball Game

by North Landesman

The faculty thought they had won.  Coach Silver rained down four 3-point shots, Mr. Moraitis directed the offense on one leg, Mr. St. Clair was “a beast,” and Mr. Landesman hit a buzzer-beater to put the faculty up 39-37 at the end of two halves of play.  The faculty had won.  The adults had defeated 13-year-olds in a game of basketball.  High five!

Math teachers and math students know that two halves make a whole, but this time they didn’t.  Coach Miceli added a bonus quarter to the game.  In this extra quarter, Coach Quinn S.’s strategy of “being in shape” paid off for the students.  Led by Nick R. with around 8 points, Brian J. with 6 points, and Jack W. with around 6 points, the faculty had more difficulty defending as time went on.  Eventually, the adults’ lack of physical fitness wore the faculty down.

The students went on to win 48-41 in the final minutes.  The faculty protested the extra time, but knew in their hearts that they had lost to the students in basketball, yet again.
