Students Versus Faculty Soccer Game

by North Landesman, Grade VI teacher

The upstart eighth grade soccer team defeated the noble faculty team 5-4 on Tuesday, November 10, on a near-stoppage time goal by Malcolm G.

For the students, Addison M. scored the first goal, Lucien G. scored the second, Jacob G. scored the third and fourth goals.  Jacob scored the fourth goal on a penalty kick upon a controversial hand-ball call on Mr. Moraitis late in the game.

Though many of the faculty members were out of shape and downright slow, Coach Mutekanga scored a hat-trick.  “Did you guys know he was fast?” Mr. Demeny asked the boys the following morning.

The eighth graders played a team game, passing, defending, and scoring as a unit.  The faculty mostly lobbed the ball deep to Coach Mutekanga, an Olympian, in the hope of outrunning a group of gangly 14-year-olds.  Though Coach Mutekanga scored three goals, the student defense, led by Henry G., Ryan C., and Banks S., were mostly able to contain him.  The faculty team was desperate and pointing fingers by the end of the game.

“We lost.  I blame Mr. Moraitis,” said Mr. Landesman, who kicked the ball three times out of six attempts.  Anonymous sources felt that the faculty team had too many “distractions,” including Mr. Merrill’s mustache, Mr. Rodriguez’s Superman t-shirt, and Mr. St. Clair’s sweat headband, taking the focus away from winning.  Others placed the blame on Coach Miceli, who fielded the unathletic teachers much too long.

The students left the game with their heads held high, proud of their victory over opponents twice their size and age.

All the teachers left the game sore, and many were shocked.  “They were so small, yet so mighty,” said one perplexed teacher limping back to school.

Given the goal scoring success of Freddy, the science intern, there were whispers of Mrs. Caldwell-Ott recruiting two science interns for next fall’s soccer game.

The defeated faculty squad vowed revenge.  “We’ve circled the Student/Faculty basketball game on our calendars,” said the teachers.  “Being tall may be more of an advantage then.”

Sports fans, make sure to come out in February for the rematch of these two competitive, fierce squads.
