Opening Assembly for the 111th School Year

by Liz Tobin
St. Bernard’s officially kicked off its 111th school year with an opening assembly this morning.  Mr. Johnson welcomed the boys back with a lesson on the history, traditions, and spirit of our great school.  The boys were refreshed on the school’s founding (St. Bernard’s was named after Mr. Jenkin’s father’s school on the rue St. Bernard in Brussels, Belgium), how its founders Mr. Tabor and Mr. Jenkins met (bumping heads on the soccer field), and the importance of following the golden rule.  Mr. Johnson also invited second grader Henry G. to the stage to demonstrate how to give a proper handshake.  A handshake should be firm.  The boy should look into the person’s eye and address him or her by name or by “sir” or “ma’am.”
Finally, with help of Mr. Risinger on the piano, the boys sang lively renditions of our school songs, including the “Junior School Song,” the “Middle School Song,” and everyone’s favorite, the “Baseball Song.”
