Multicultural Fair 2015

On the morning of March 6, St. Bernard’s learned about the cultures of Mexico and the Philippines for the school’s annual Multicultural Fair.  The boys were treated to presentations and performances at assembly in the small gym, followed by an interactive exhibition in the medium gym.

The fair kicked-off at assembly with the movements and beats of traditional Philippine tinikling dancing, in which dancers hop around moving bamboo beams.  Then Margot V. took the stage to teach us about the unique geography, wildlife, and culture of the Philippines.  The islands were formed from volcanic eruptions in the ocean, and its rainforests and its extensive coastlines make it home to a diverse range of birds, plants, animals, and sea creatures.  After learning about its history and people, two martial artists took the stage to demonstrate the Philippine sport of Arnis.

Presenting next was Frances H., who taught us about Mexican history as well as some of the arts and foods that the country is known for producing.  Bringing an element of a party to the room, a four-member Mariachi band took stage and performed Mexican folk music, followed by lively Jarabe dancers.  The party was about to end when, to the audience’s surprise and delight, Mr. Hager jumped on stage and sang with the Mariachi band.

Later in the medium gym, Pre-Hispanic Mexican culture was well represented.  The Mesoamerican ballcourt was a huge hit, and boys took turns trying to deflect a ball off their bodies, without using their hands, through a hoop.  The troupe of Concheros dancers also attracted a following with boys learning and imitating their dance moves.

Courageous boys tried their feet between the moving bamboo beams for the Philippine tinikling dance, and a few brave boys tried their taste buds on the Mexican peppers.  Getting to touch and hold a live starfish found in the Philippines coral reefs brought the fair to life.  The music, costumes, and artifacts dazzled all of our senses.  Many thanks to the fair’s co-chairs, Frances H., Marean P., Claudia R., and Margot V., and to the many other volunteers who put on a fair to remember.
