Knot Time in VIII Clements

Mr. Clements is teaching his eighth grade boys how to tie knots during homeroom for the next few weeks.  “With luck, the boys will soon be masters of the bowline, the carrick bend, and the taut-line hitch,” he said.  “With these three knots they can face all of life’s emergencies.”

Mr. Clements gave each of his boys two thin ropes and two rules:  no using the rope for anything other than practicing knots and no taking the rope out of the classroom.  This morning in homeroom the boys practiced tying the taut-line hitch knot on the legs of their chairs, which were upside down and on top of their desks.  The taut-line hitch is a useful knot that is easily adjustable to tighten or slacken load.  By the appearance of their tight lines, the boys got hang of it.
