Community Book: The Wednesday Wars

The Community Book offers a chance for teachers and students across different grades to share the experience of reading a book together.  After reading the book over the summer, grades V-IX spent a morning discussing their thoughts.

This year’s selection was The Wednesday Wars, a work of historical fiction by Gary Schmidt set in 1960s.  The story follows a boy dealing with the challenges of seventh grade and the often strained relationships with his family and teachers.

In an assembly in the Small Gym, three eighth graders and three faculty members gave a speech about aspects of The Wednesday Wars that interested them most.  After the assembly, students were directed to classrooms throughout the building for small group discussions. At lunchtime, Chef Mizquiri treated the boys to cream puffs which were featured in the book.

Many thanks to the English department and the library for organizing another successful community book.
