Collecting for St. B’s Archives

by Janine St. Germain, school archivist
As sad as it is to see a teacher retire from St. Bernard’s, it is most often a time when true gems find their way into the stacks of the archives.
It is a treat for the collection to receive physical documents of past teaching plans, correspondence, exams, quizzes, artwork, and often heartfelt words from students of years past.  These records have great value, particularly now in an electronic era, and often include mimeographed quizzes, handwritten notes, typewritten memoranda, lists, lists, and more lists, as well as  dog-eared pages filled with earnest penmanship, to name but a few.

In past years, Susan Kronengold, Bob Miness, and most recently Jean Leness have all graciously offered material to the archives.  These documents speak volumes, of not only the care they offered to the craft of teaching, but also the admiration they received from the boys over the years.  The archives is extraordinarily lucky to have papers dating back to the earliest grade books of our first headmaster, and continues to receive papers from teachers who have served as faculty for decades.  In the St. Bernard’s School Archives, history is always in the making.
