St. B’s Animal Protection Club

An oversized jar filled with gummy bears appeared in the lobby last week.  This mysterious jar was placed there by the newly founded Animal Protection Club and was an important part of their first fundraiser.

For $1.00 boys were given a chance to guess how many gummy bears there were in the jar.  They could purchase three guesses for $2.00.  The Animal Protection Club raised an impressive $495.00 to be donated to ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Sixth grader Karl M. founded the Animal Protection Club several months ago.  He likes animals and wanted to find a way to help them.  He also wanted to encourage his friends to help.  Karl reached out to the Middle School, and a group of ten dedicated members quickly assembled.  The club met once a week during prep, and over a short time the total membership grew to forty boys.

We spoke with Clark C., Henry C., Francisco D., Will F., Karl M., and Alexander S. to learn about the Animal Protection Club’s vision.  They hope to raise awareness among their peers to help prevent animal cruelty.  They strongly believe in the missions of organizations such as ASPCA and the World Wildlife Fund.  They are grateful to Ms. Oshins, their faculty advisor, who has been a great help.  They were also pleased that the Parents Association president was enthusiastic about the club and was eager to help them with the logistics for their first collection for ASPCA.

In looking ahead, they plan to expand the club into two branches, one for Middle School boys and another for Upper Schoolers.  To help raise awareness, they would like to volunteer at an animal shelter.  They have also brainstormed ways to document such visits so they can share their experiences with other boys at the school.  They would like to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund and continue to learn about other organizations that are devoted to protecting animals.  They were pleased with the participation in the most recent drive.  The future looks bright for St. B’s Animal Protection Club and the animals they are eager to protect.  We look forward to seeing how the boys in the club continue to make a difference next year.
