Kindergarten Boys Visit the FDNY Fire Zone

Kindergarten boys took a field trip to the FDNY Fire Zone this week.  Fireman Ned taught the boys all about fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire emergency.

There were approximately 36,000 fires in New York last year, so the boys were reminded of the importance of fire safety.  They learned several fire safety tips by reciting and singing phrases such as “Don’t hide; go outside!” and “Stay low and go!”  They were reminded to always tell an adult if they thought there was a fire and to call 911 after they had arrived at a safe place away from the fire.  Fireman Ned highlighted the importance of preparation and practice.  The boys then had the chance to practice what they had learned by navigating through a multimedia fire simulation.  The boys all successfully crawled to safety!

The highlight for many of the boys was trying on real firefighting gear and climbing onto a fire truck.  There were plenty of gadgets and knobs for everyone to try, and the boys had a terrific time exploring the world of the fire department.

Many thanks to the Kindergarten teachers, the parent chaperones, and to Fireman Ned and his team at the Fire Zone.
