St. Bernard’s Math Team Places Seventh in MATHCounts Competition

On Saturday, February 3, St. Bernard’s math team competed in the annual MATHCounts Manhattan competition at Baruch College.  The nine members of the team qualified by earning the highest scores on a preliminary exam that was given to all St. B’s students in Grades VI - VIII last fall.

Last Saturday, Dr. Johnson and Ms. Robinson led their team through a day of problem-solving challenges, including the “Sprint Round,” thirty short-answer problems, and the “Target Round,” both of which the boys faced individually.  The boys then came together as a team to work through another set of problems before taking a well-deserved lunch break.

In the afternoon, all of the participants gathered in the Baruch Performing Arts Center to listen to a talk by professional mathematician Dr. Japheth Wood and then to find out the results of the morning competitions.  St. B’s team earned seventh place out of forty-five teams and was honored with a trophy on stage.  While only the top five teams continue on to compete in the state competition, placing in the top seven is an impressive achievement.  Congratulations to St. B’s 2018 math team!

Many thanks to Dr. Johnson for his support and guidance.  Thanks to both Dr. Johnson and Ms. Robinson for accompanying the team to the competition last weekend.
