The First Days of Middle School

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time, especially for students who are advancing to a new school level.

The boys who have entered Middle School this year are navigating the transition from Junior School beautifully.  They feel well-prepared and are enjoying new challenges, and they are already having fun.  Several boys from Grade IV shared their perspectives about their first few weeks of Middle School.

For Henry H., Middle School is easier than he thought it would be.  He has noticed several things that are different in Middle School.  Fourth graders get to use the toaster one day a week, so Henry has a newfound love for lunch on Mondays.  Henry also enjoys being able to wear different colored shirts instead of the red, white, or blue ones that must be worn in Junior School.  In his opinion, the best thing that has happened so far is that he ran for class representative.  He didn’t win, but it was a great experience, and he’s looking forward to trying again later in the year.  He is looking forward to working harder and hopes he has made a great first impression.

Middle School is starting off well for Aden.  He was excited to learn about the new subjects he will be studying this year, including geography and lessons with Mr. Demeny.  In Mr. Demeny’s class they have talked, participated in some activities, and shared their goals for the year.  Aden is also excited to audition for Chamber Singers this year.  Aden’s advice to anyone starting fourth grade is to be prepared for tougher classes, challenging teachers, and to be prepared to work harder.  Aden’s favorite part of the year so far has been learning Roman history and meeting new friends.

Christoph has noticed that as a Middle School student, he is in school longer, especially on Fridays.  However, on Fridays he also gets to stay for lunch, which he enjoys.  He was surprised by the new schedule.  For example, the school day starts earlier.  Christoph thinks his teachers are amazing and likes them all.  He explains that there is a lot going on in Middle School, but everything is well organized.  While his schedule changes from day to day, he finds that they stay on the fourth floor most of the time.  Christoph’s advice to younger boys entering the Middle School is to stand your ground, stay out of trouble, and be a good student.  “As long as you listen you’ll be fine.  Middle School is super fun.”

Ruiyu has noticed that there are more male teachers in Middle School.  He has also noticed that tests are a bit more frequent, and students receive grades for the first time.  A typical day is busy, going to different classes and keeping track of the different classes and assignments.  Ruiyu is happy when he gets a test back and does well.  His advice to new Middle Schoolers is to work hard and be nice; don’t be scared of the male teachers; have fun, but don’t get too crazy.  Ruiyu is looking forward to learning about Rome and trying out for Chamber Singers for the first time.

Jojo has had a good year so far.  Some of the differences he has noticed are staying for lunch on Fridays, recess on Fridays, and that the school day is a little longer.  There are more subjects and new subjects, such as vocabulary, history, and geography.  There are also number and letter grades for subjects.  Jojo was expecting the teachers to be stricter, but they are not.  Jojo really likes his homeroom teacher, Mr. Davis.  Jojo’s advice to someone entering Middle School is to stay loose and try not to think negatively.  One of the best moments for Jojo this year was when he got his first test back and felt proud for doing well.  He is already looking forward to fifth grade when he can start studying French.  For anyone new to St. Bernard’s, Jojo predicts that you’re going to love St. Bernard’s and that you will have good years ahead.
