Grade V Nick Cave Tour

Emily Munro
Grade V took a walk down 5th Ave today to visit the Guggenheim Museum and explore the artwork of contemporary artist Nick Cave.
Students began their exploration of the museum in its famous rotunda, where the installation was underway and they got a firsthand look at how the museum installs artwork on its curved walls. Then they headed upstairs to the museum’s tower galleries where they toured Nick Cave: Forothermore, a retrospective of the artist’s body of works. Nick Cave is internationally known for his elaborate textile works and installations featuring found objects and his iconic Soundsuits, which are both sculptural works and costumes meant to be worn by dancers. The boys spent some time drawing in the gallery before coming back together to discuss their observations of both the soundsuits and the enormous circular Tondo works, which are inspired by weather maps and traditional beading techniques.
