American Ballet Theatre

This year marks the tenth consecutive year St. Bernard’s has worked with the American Ballet Theatre, the world-renowned dance company.  ABT held several workshops with the third grade which introduced the boys to the wonders of ballet.

The first workshop took place at school.  Each third grade class met an ABT instructor in the medium gym to learn about movement.  On Wednesday, March 4, the boys and their teachers took a field trip to ABT’s beautiful rehearsal studios on Broadway and 19th Street.  Parents were invited to observe the morning and there were many in attendance.

The boys learned about all aspects of ballet, including how pointe shoes and tutus are made.  The boys created a piece of artwork depicting an ogre in large boots as many classical ballets are based on fairy tales.  An instructor taught the boys a choreographed dance which they performed in front of the parents.  It was quite exciting to jump on the studio’s super bouncy floors!

The morning concluded with a performance by two of the pre-professional students. The dancers are immensely talented and our boys were impressed.  The dancers kindly took questions afterward and talked about their lives as ballet students.

We thank the American Ballet Theatre for welcoming our boys once again this year.
