Junior Old Boys Lunch 2019

Kate Fiscus
Kate Fiscus, Director of Old Boys, describes the Junior Old Boys Lunch, which took place on November 27.

After the Mayflower Compact is read aloud during assembly, once teachers and boys return to St. Bernard’s from the annual soccer match, and backpacks are stuffed with work to complete for Thanksgiving break, St. Bernard’s opens its doors to our high school and college aged Old Boys.  The Junior Old Boys Lunch has become a holiday tradition that I look forward to each year at St. Bernard’s.

The Junior Old Boys enter the school much taller than we last saw them.  They are eager to catch us up on life in high school and college.  Boys near and far from East 98th Street have the opportunity to reconnect and say hello to former teachers.  Lunch this year was shepherd’s pie which led to many conversations of shared memories eating this same meal in the dining hall when they were students.

Thanks to Coach Moraitis, the seventh floor becomes the place to be once lunch concludes.  Pick-up basketball games such as HORSE and Around the World quickly form on the hardwood.  Around 4:00 p.m., our Junior Old Boys start to leave to officially begin their Thanksgiving holiday.

I am grateful for the loyal Old Boys, catering staff, maintenance team, and faculty and staff members who make this event possible year after year.
