VI Moraitis: "Don’t Look Back"
Midway through the fall term, the class plays begin. Each class in grades I-VII performs a play during the Friday assembly. As has been the recent tradition, the lineup begins with Mr. Moraitis’s sixth grade.
Don’t Look Back was a modern, and often comical, portrayal of the Greek myth of Orpheus’s unsuccessful attempt to rescue Eurydice from Hades. As you may remember, Orpheus, the most talented musician of all time, embarked on the dangerous journey down to the underworld to beg Hades to release his recently deceased wife Eurydice. Hades agrees on the condition that upon the walk back, Orpheus must not look back at his wife.
The play opens with Orpheus, played by Ranaa T., beautifully playing the recorder as Charon, Hugh E., paddles the pair across the river into the underworld. AC/DC’s Highway to Hell begins to blare on the speakers as Hades appears with not one but two pairs of cool sunglasses and a rock-star blue wig. Win N.’s sharp-tongued Hades is a force to be reckoned with. So too is his bride Persephone, perfectly played by Julian F.
The entire cast is terrific, from the boys who play the three-headed dog, Cerberus, to the Furies. A pair of Greek and Roman narrators put the story in context. An imposing set, created by Mr. Sechrist, transported us to the dark underworld. Bravo to the director and playwright, Mr. Moraitis, and his team of actors.
