Environmental Heroes

In science this semester, third graders looked closely at potential threats to the environment, such as pollution, non-renewable energy sources, deforestation, plastics, and climate change.

They also learned about some of our planet’s greatest heroes, environmentalists who dedicated their lives to preserving nature and protecting the diversity of life on our planet.  From John Muir, who founded the Sierra Club in 1892, to Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, the boys became familiar with some of the incredible environmental heroes throughout history.

After this inspiration, students were invited to create their own fictional environmental heroes who could conquer one of the real threats to our environment today.  The boys drew their heroes on iPads and inserted them into dramatic comic book stories that tackled deforestation, pollution, wildfires, and plastic waste.  Heroes named Mr. Recycle and Deforestation Man defeated villains who were making too much plastic or tearing down the forests where orangutans lived, and in the end much good was done to protect the environment.  Working on their projects in science and computer class, the boys had time to develop their stories and apply what they had learned in science in a fun way.
