Old Boys Dinner 2016

We were delighted to host St. Bernard’s annual Old Boys Dinner on Thursday, January 21, 2016.  Over two hundred Old Boys gathered at St. B’s, along with current and former faculty members, to celebrate, reminisce, and catch up.  It was a festive and lively gathering.

The evening began with a well-attended presentation in the King-Wood Theater, by eighth grade teacher Mr. Clements.  He discussed the history of our building at 4 East 98th Street, which officially turned one hundred years old in 2015.  Son of our former headmaster, Michael Westgate ’52, joined Mr. Clements on stage to share stories and memories from his many years spent in this building.

Then the festivities continued in the small gym for cocktails and hors d’oeuvre.  Old Boys stocked up on St. B’s memorabilia at the General Store, thanks to Margaret W. (daughter of an Old Boy) and Leslie B., two brave mothers who set up and oversaw the store.  The Old Boys instinctually knew when it was time to pause their conversations to join together in some heartfelt singing.

After school songs were sung, Gifford Miller ’83 shared some highlights about St. B’s current students, including updates about St. B’s cross country team and the undefeated, league championship winner, St. B’s soccer team.  He also mentioned the class of 2004, which had the most members in attendance that night.  Gifford also noted particular attendees, including Harold deRopp ’71, who traveled all the way from Japan, Charlie Kinsolving ’40, the oldest Old Boy in attendance, and six members of the class of 2007, the youngest Old Boys at the event.  There were two pairs of fathers and sons and at least thirteen sets of Old Boy brothers in attendance, many of whom are also current parents.  For reunions, it was a big year for classes from the 1950s.  The class of 1951 celebrates its 65th reunion this year, and the class of 1956 celebrates its 60th reunion.

The Old Boys enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Chef Carolyn Wells and her team.  After dinner everyone enjoyed cigars and conversation.  All in all it was a wonderful night.  We loved seeing everyone and look forward to next year!

Many thanks to everyone who made this event a success, especially Mia Anderson, Director of Old Boys; Chef Carolyn Wells and her amazing team; Julio Rodriguez, Jay Lopez, Tony Barrios, and their fantastic team.  A special thanks to volunteers Mr. Demeny, Mrs. FitzGerald, Ms. Oduro, Ms. Oshins, and Ms. Tobin.
