Old Boys Dinner 2015

by Elizabeth Tobin, Director of Old Boys

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, over 250 Old Boys gathered for the annual Old Boys Dinner.  The classes of 1994 and 2005 set a new attendance record with sixteen representatives each.  Additionally, we had three sets of fathers and sons and twelve sets of brothers.

It was a lively bunch at 4 East 98th Street.  Some gentlemen had not returned to St. B’s since they were graduated.  They quickly assimilated with the faithful who return every year.  And then there was excitement over welcoming the class of 2006 to its first Old Boys Dinner.  We are looking forward to having the class of 2007 join us next year.

The evening kicked off with cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvre in the small gym.  Old Boys caught up with their former teachers, both current and retired.  Meanwhile upstairs in the Middle School room Mr. White taught poetry to a packed class of over twenty men.  Back in the small gym the crowd thickened to the extent that people asked where they could find the pop-up school store, which was in the room.  Alex Daniels ’80, co-president of the Old Boys Council addressed everyone, giving a special welcome to Jordy Urstadt ’86 who traveled the farthest, coming from Switzerland for the dinner.  Also recognized was the oldest attending Old Boy, Charlie Kinsolving ’40.

On the piano George Winters ’69 lead everyone in singing the “Old Boys Song” before heading to dinner in the medium gym where the tables were organized by class.  Chef Carolyn Wells prepared a feast that included beef short ribs and salmon.  The buffet was an architectural masterpiece, recycling stage props from the school’s performance of The Twelfth Night put on by students in Grade VIII just weeks before.  After dinner many Old Boys continued to reconnect with their classmates over cigars and singing some of their favorite St. B’s songs.

Thanks to all who helped to make the event a success, especially Director of Old Boys Elizabeth Tobin; Chef Carolyn Wells and her amazing team; Julio Rodriguez, Jay Lopez, Tony Barrios, and their fantastic team.
