Ninth Grade Presents ABCs to Kindergarten South

by Perry Meigs, Art teacher

This spring the ninth grade boys worked on a photography project called “How to Frame the World Around You” with a focus on the letters of the alphabet.  Their assignment was to photograph the entire alphabet and present it to St. Bernard’s kindergarten.

In art class the ninth graders learned how to frame images so their subjects pop.  Then they went around school in search of letters in unexpected places and forms.  They found letters in the front entry, cafeteria, classrooms, and library.  For examples, the window above the front entry became a “D,” and a chord dangling off a classroom desk became a “U”.  They consolidated their images and put together a PowerPoint presentation of the ABCs.

On Tuesday, May 26, the ninth graders visited Kindergarten South and presented their alphabet to twenty-two ABC aficionados.  Together, they sang the alphabet song while flipping through the images.  Then the ninth graders explained how they found the letters and made their images.  Breaking into teams, they took the younger boys around the classroom to find hidden letters.  During the letter hunt they discovered a class photograph of the ninth graders when they were in kindergarten.  Coincidently, all six of this year’s ninth grade boys were students in Kindergarten South.  The kindergarten boys were beyond delighted to have the big boys in their classroom.
