New Swimming Program

A new addition to St. Bernard’s physical education is a student swimming program.  Now boys in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades may learn and practice swimming two days a week with qualified coaches.  Over thirty boys are participating in this inaugural season, and we expect the numbers to grow.

St. Bernard’s students, parents, and coaches desired a swim program, and much thought and effort were put into its conception.  Although building a pool on the roof or in the basement was explored, after much investigation, which included rock and sediment tests and looking at several off-site pool locations, the school decided that using the pool at a local Y was the best choice.

A major supporter of the swim program is St. Bernard’s fencing coach Jordan Maggio, who was a competitive diver and swimmer for his grade school’s swim team.  He envisions a St. Bernard’s swim team complete with swim meets.  With the way that the program is currently going in its first year—swimmingly—his dream may become a reality soon.
