Nepalese Poet Yuyutsu Sharma Visits the Upper School

by Malcolm St. Clair

The Upper School was pleased to welcome the Nepalese poet Yuyustu Sharma on Tuesday morning.  Mr. Sharma spoke to the boys about living among the great mountains of the Himalayas and shared some of his poetry.  He described the eastern view of the Himalayas as a holy place and of the mountains as individual, special beings.  The Nepalese name for Mt. Everest, for example, means, “Forehead of the Sky,” and the Chinese name, “Mother of the Winds of the World.”  He has found solace among the mountains, too; he told a story of how he went hiking after the death of his mother.  Many of his experiences have resulted in poems, in which he describes sights, creatures, and places that have inspired him.  He also spoke about the process of writing poetry, how the subject of his poems “possess” him and he merely writes them down.  It was truly special to have a speaker with such an exotic perspective.  Thanks to Chef Wells and Mr. Bowcock for making his visit happen.
