Introducing James Colvin, St. B's First Science Intern of the Year

St. Bernard’s is pleased to welcome James Colvin, the first science intern of the year, visiting from Winchester College in Hampshire, England.  Winchester College was founded by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England, in 1382.  James Colvin is the first of three interns who will spend time with us this year.  This is the tenth year that Wykehamists, graduates of Winchester, have worked at St. B’s and we feel lucky to have them.

James graduated from Winchester College last July.  During his gap year between high school and university, James hoped to visit the United States.  Upon the recommendation of Chris Yates, the head of Winchester’s Gap Year Program, and previous participants, James decided to spend three months at St. Bernard’s working as the science intern.

James has already been hard at work helping Kindergarten boys fill out lab reports, preparing soil to transplant corn, radish, and bean plants for an experiment in grade II, and handling the day-to-day tasks of washing and sorting beakers and other science equipment.  Mrs. Caldwell-Ott has already noticed how much help James has been and appreciates his great attitude.

James is interested in Latin and Greek and plans to focus on linguistics at university.  He also enjoys studying ancient history.  In his free time, he plays cricket, practices the guitar, and listens to music.  One of his favorite bands, Flyte, is from Winchester.  James is looking forward to exploring New York and getting to know the family he is staying with.  He mentioned that St. B’s feels like a really good place.  He can see that people are hard-working and was impressed by the number of English teachers and staff  members here.

The science intern program was formalized with Winchester College in 2005.  Over the years, St. B’s has been greatly impressed by the interns from Winchester.  These young men have been wonderful and gone on to be quite successful.

Please join us in welcoming James Colvin to St. B’s.
