Community Service Saturday

by Ramon Rodriguez

On Saturday, October 25, a group of fifth and sixth grade students met at St. Bernard's School for a day of community service.  This meeting was the first of a new collaboration between St. Bernard's and the East Harlem Tutorial Program.  The service day began with games such as capture the flag led by Ms. Oshins and Mr. Moraitis.  The favorite was a game called "Biggest Fan," which involved tournament style "rock/paper/scissors” eliminations, and culminated in one final battle with thirty-eight screaming fans.  After a pizza lunch the boys and girls learned a little about hunger issues in New York City and the NY Common Pantry.  They then split into eight groups, and efficiently organized 280 brown bag lunches (many of which contained hand written notes and drawing of support). At the end of the event a small group transported sixteen boxes full of brown bag lunches to the NY Common Pantry.  They met with Dana, an outreach coordinator, who gave them a tour of the facility and a more detailed description of the services the NY Common Pantry offers to the community.  It was a fun and rewarding day for all who were involved.  Thank you to all the participants.
