Purpose
St. Bernard’s offers able young boys of diverse backgrounds an exceptionally thorough, rigorous, and enjoyable introduction to learning and community life. We wish to inspire boys to value hard work and fair play, to develop confidence, consideration for others, and a sense of citizenship, and to have fun while doing these things.

Young boys enjoy many benefits from an elementary school designed just for them. A small school devoted to the crucial early years of learning and development gives full attention to its students in a nurturing community, a little world where they are loved and valued. A school for boys provides them with teachers who understand their needs—intellectual, emotional, physical—and help them take risks and grow with greater freedom.
We welcome and seek a diverse community of students, faculty, and parents. We want everyone here to appreciate the different experiences and backgrounds that all of us bring to school each day. We also encourage boys and teachers to value each other’s individuality. Cooperation and loyalty to the group are essential, and they come more readily when a boy’s identity is strong and when others accept him.
A regard for the beauty and power of English and the confident manipulation of numbers are delightful in themselves and essential for future success. Learning how to learn and mastering a body of knowledge are also of great importance. We want our boys to develop good habits of study and a solid beginning knowledge of literature, history, geography, science, mathematics, foreign languages, and the arts.
Athletics plays a large part in the lives of most boys. They enjoy rigorous exercise and healthy competition. They also learn important lessons about teamwork, leadership, hard but fair play, and graceful winning and losing.
Creativity and expression in many fields are highly important. We are especially proud of our boys’ achievements as writers, public speakers, singers, and actors.
A boy’s first source of morality, curiosity, good manners, and self-discipline is his family. The school and parents should work together to bring out these qualities in our boys. A good heart is as valuable as a well-stocked, well-trained head.
